"As a Vietnam-era Vet and retired Navy guy, I was interested in watching the movie, which I had never seen before. I was actually enthralled by the movie's theme music, Stanley Myers' "Cavatina." i am a classical guitar enthusiast and have heard the music many times. I decided that I couldn't play it convincingly until I had seen the movie. I had to warch it in two segments. The wedding and preparation for vietnam seemed to drag on; however, I turned it off when the US forces were captured and subjected to the NVA Russian Roulette torture. I lost a lot of my friends there, and it was hard for me to watch the brutality. But, the next night I returned to the movie with new resolve and watched as the plot played out. Robert DeNiro is a magnificent actor, as is Christopher Walken. John Savage played a convincing "Lieutenant Dan" with no legs. Whatever happened to John Savage, anyway? Overall, the movie was realistic and poignant. I shed more than a few tears (now that I am past 60 years of age I can do that without remorse). The movie left me with the feeling that I have had for some time -- that war is a stupid waste of lives and resources. Why haven't we learned after all these years? The bravado of our youth gives way to a sensitivity that exposes our souls when we grow old. Does anyone out there agree with me? Thanks for reading."
