Questionable Practices, December 12, 2008

"Although this company is not doing anything illegal it surely isn't ethical. I recently made the mistake of searching for a vanity number on their site, we were considering using a service like theirs, but determined it would be more cost effective to proceed with an in house system. Unfortunately the number we wanted which was available, was locked down by GotVmail for 15 days because we hit the next button on their website, there was no disclaimer about number locking. We waited the 15 days during which I made the second mistake of calling them inquiring about the 15 days, which then led the number to be reserved for a longer period of time, apparently by number locking they think this assures them of getting the sale. We were already on a short time schedule, and now thanks to them we had to move onto a generic number to get up and running, since we were not going to be strong-armed into their service. By them locking the number down did not assure sales for them it just made everything more difficult for us. Reserving numbers without the customer actually requesting them to be reserved seems highly unethical. They should consider good old fashioned customer service and business skills as opposed to shady techniques to drive sales."
