Omron GoSmart HJ-720ITC, September 3, 2009
By emailtobob

"Recently, my son bought me a GoSmart HJ-720ITC in late August 2009. My first pedometer was a Sportline 4407, which I bought in early August of 2009. However, the accuracy did not seem correct. I also did not know you could download data from a pedometer. With the new pedometer in hand I had to compare.

Now, in all fairness, the Sportline did not advertise the data was downloadable. I was completely okay with jotting down the steps taken at the end of the day. Below are my findings based off of two 100 steps I manually counted.

First Test 100 Steps

Sportline
119

GoSmart
103

Second 100 Steps

Sportline
126

GoSmart
112

This may not seem like much of a difference but yesterday I had the following for the daily count of steps taken on September 3, 2009:

GoSmart

3,326

Sportline

9,656

Both pedometers were in the same pocket and are considered pocket pedometers. That’s a huge difference in reporting my total daily steps. I am neither a mathematician nor a scientist. If anyone has a better way of comparing pedometers please let me know.

Bottom line for me is that I have a target number in mind. I can tell that when I hit 15,000 steps using the Sportline, I felt as though I did a lot of walking. Several days where the Sportline showed 6,000 steps, I knew I did not move much. I was very busy with meeting a deadline and I was sitting most of the day. The Sportline pedometer indicated my inactivity.

Set a target number using any pedometer and track your results. Since I can download with the GoSmart, I'm going to use this pedometer for quite some time."
