Dependable grinder for small spices, February 25, 2009
By Realyrosey

"The Kuhn Rikon Vase Spice Grinder does do what I bought it for and that is to work, where others I’ve had before it have failed. I purchased it to table grind my sea salt and it works very well, without tedious, long grinding., producing instant ground spice. The additional spice inserts are a great idea and ground my flax seed very well. However, when I replaced the salt container, seed left in the mechanism fell back into the salt cup.

I would suggest using a small brush to clean out the mechanism between spices. To disassemble the mechanism on top, simply unscrew (all the way) the bolt on the top that controls the grind and lift out the small porcelain grinder. You can then either wash it out, or simply brush any left over spice from the mechanism.

If you typically use the same basic spices for cooking, the minor mix-up of spices in using the different containers may not be a bother except for the few specialty spices, say for fish and seafood. You may want to keep an additional grinder for cloves, cinnamon, etc., or pepper, due to the fall back problem.

For what I bought it for it works well. I find that the review given above is right on target for this grinder.

If you're like me, and don't really mind a few co-mingled spices, I recommend this grinder simply because it does grind nicely, without getting hung up the way many other grinders do."
