"A contemporary love story. It does not need torrid sex scenes to keep the reader interested. My high school students related to the characters and enjoyed discussing: John's decision to enlist in the army and then re-enlist after 9-11, Savannah's ambition to be a special education teacher and John's decision to help Savannah the only way he knew how. Many of my students are considering military service and enjoyed reading about the friendships and brotherhood experienced by the men serving together. It was a great story to discuss and explore what it means to truly love another person. Each student was asked to define love before and after reading this book and it was exciting to see how their ideas had changed and matured. As a class we learned more about Asperger's syndrome and autism while exploring the benefits of equestrian therapy. One student knew of a program in CT and brought in pictures of students with various disabilities benefiting from this form of therapy. My students were surprised that the story was so current and they liked the details about restaurants and places that were familiar to the experiences of their lives. i highly recommend this book because it has a great story line, keeps the interest of the readers and lends itself to learning more about love and life."
