"I never thought I'd see the day where I'd prefer a nonfiction book over fiction and fantasy, but here it is. Mark Salzman's writing -- and the children's writing! -- have moved my time and time again.
True Notebooks is the touching tale of a few juvenile delinquents. Through the course of the novel, the reader comes to sympathize with the boys, and one can really see how both the boys and Salzman change.
In addition, the teenagers' writing is spectacularly good. There are people in my school who can't write as well as they do. Each piece of writing slowly draws the reader in. One would never be able to tell that the work was done by teens who have been in prison for months and years.
Mark Salzman tells the story with precision and grace, turning the bitter stories of the teenagers into touching tales of triumph over tragedy. What really moves me is that these characters can have a FUTURE as a writer. One of the former prisoners is to be released in June, and has been published online by widely regarded websites. These teens' talents are not to be wasted, and Salzman conveys this message beautifully and properly."
