A TRUE CRETAN, June 8, 2009

"Stratis was a true friend of my wife Carole and I.We first met him some 13 years or so ago when he had completed his national service.Having spent several years travelling along the Cretan south coast we discovered Loutro one day on a short ferry trip.What a little lesser known gem!!!
He was working at our favourite hotel The Daskalougiannis run by the traditional local family of the descendants of the great greek hero.
It was obvious from the start that here was a truly dedicated south Cretan.We learned to love his gentle nature and generosity.As the years passed, his maturity brought about a transformation.Here was a young man involved in the local dance movement and the tradition of local costume.
With family support,he opened his own taverna.Totally unique in the food he presented.Good ,fresh,locally produced,cooked to order and inexpensive.We were drawn back many times for the experience.
It was with great sadness that we learned of his passing.For a while it seemed that this great establishment was lost to us free spirits.We were however delighted to hear that his family have decided to honour his memory by re-opening "Stratis"
Long may it live on.
