odd number of onions,

"I've been know to substitute cocktail onions for my usual lemon twist when I prepare my Beefeater martini.
However, I wonder why your recipe calls for either one or three onions, Is there some logical reason for this or is it a superstition?
Does the same hold true if one prefers olives as a garnish?
