"If your baking powder isn't fresh and leavening, it won't rise and you'll have a flat, crisp cake. If you don't bake often, you might have expired or dead baking powder. The recipe is fine, and classic.
You may need to check your pantry. Stir a teaspoonful of baking powder into a 1/4 cup of water. If it barely fizzles, or doesn't at all, you need to toss it in the trashcan."
