Would make again, have to work on the filling, November 19, 2008

"Something is just missing in the filling. The dough comes out perfect, and is a great recipe - but the filling is just missing something. The best cocktail buns are made in SF Chinatown at the Bakery on Grant Street - I've been going there to get my cocktail buns for the past 35 years (they've been around longer). This is the closest you can get to the dough recipe, but the filling is supposed to be a lot creamier, different consistency - almost like uncooked dough in the middle and does not taste as strong of coconut, it's more of a mild coconut taste - almost to the point of where if you did not know the flavor's origin that someone has to tell you it is coconut in the filling. There may be some condensed milk missing or something, because the bakery style buns' filling is also not as yellow as this one - suggesting that maybe there is less yolk involved. Otherwise, this is a great basis to start from."
