"I made this recipe for a potluck (which we're just finishing up as I write this) and I’ve received rave reviews so far. I found the ingredient list and instructions easy to follow. My only suggestion on the ingredient list might have been to section it out into 'Cake Mix', 'Tres Leche sauce' and 'Topping'.
My cake batter was extremely thick and fudge-like, so I added an extra egg just so I could finish mixing it. (I don't know if it was because of the minor changes to the box cake formula or if it was the box cake mix itself - their recipe called for water, oil & 3 eggs). When the cake was finished, it had a springy, light sponge-cake texture, and it rose very well. The cinnamon was a nice touch that helped brighten up the devil's food cake flavor.
I followed the instructions for the tres leche sauce to the letter as I’m not a confident cook when it comes to sauces & gravies. The sauce turned out perfectly. It seemed like a lot of liquid for the cake to absorb, but much like the previous reviewer, the next time I make it I’m probably going to make about 1 ½ times the sauce for a more ‘tres leche’ consistency.
I attempted the meringue and broke it from overmixing, but with some practice I could probably get it to work out.
Thank you for making my first tres leche cake a roaring success overall "
