"I dunno about 5 minutes' cooking time being too short for asparagus -- the Romans used to say "do it in the time it takes to cook asparagus" when they wanted something done pronto.
As for the "day before project," means you can get it ready, invite people, and talk with them over a glass of wine rather than futz in the kitchen. All comes down to planning.
I though the soup was pretty good."
