"Yes, the original recipe calls for rye. The reason good bartenders generally call for Canadian whiskey now is precisely because it is the only widely available whiskey which is still mostly rye. Straight rye is only made by a few distillers, but if you can get a hold of a bottle, use it! Rye is also the proper whiskey for a Sazerac, but now Bourbon is the usual one (technically, I believe then it is known as a New Orleans Sazerac)."
